Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about birthday party insurance.
Many venues require proof of at least $1,000,000 in general liability before they'll confirm your booking. Beyond venue requirements, a policy can help protect you financially if someone gets hurt or something gets damaged during your birthday party - costs that could otherwise come out of pocket.
Pricing depends on your guest count, event duration, and the coverage options you select. You can see your exact price instantly with no commitment required.
A standard policy covers general liability for bodily injury and property damage. Optional add-ons include host liquor liability for events where alcohol is served, Waiver of Subrogation, and Primary & Non-Contributory status.
Fill out the online form, choose your options, and your Certificate of Insurance arrives within minutes. Keep in mind that coverage itself begins no sooner than the next day - the earliest coverage date you can select is tomorrow. No phone calls, no paperwork to mail in.
Yes - at no extra charge, you name your venue on your certificate during checkout, and the policy's additional insured endorsements extend protection to owners, managers, and lessors of your event premises - and to municipalities issuing event permits - as required by written contract. The certificate reflecting this is included automatically. Caterers and other vendors aren't eligible for additional insured status. Note that venues often also require a Waiver of Subrogation and a Primary & Non-Contributory Endorsement, which are separate optional coverages that can be added for an additional charge.
Alcohol-related coverage is never included automatically - it is an optional paid add-on. For eligible events where alcohol is served but not sold, host liquor liability can be added during checkout. Available alcohol-related coverage options depend on the event type and eligibility shown during checkout.
Gigsure policies cover liability and property protection for your event. If you need to cancel, contact your venue and vendors directly - cancellation terms are governed by your vendor agreements, not your event liability policy.
All policies are underwritten by an insurance carrier rated A++ (Superior) by AM Best - one of the highest ratings in the insurance industry. Your carrier is named on your quote and policy documents.
Complete Guide to Birthday Party Insurance
Everything you need to know before purchasing coverage for your birthday party.
Hosting a birthday celebration brings joy and excitement, but it also carries financial risks that many party hosts overlook. Our birthday party insurance can provide essential financial protection, allowing hosts to celebrate with confidence rather than worry about potential liability.
From intimate gatherings of 15 children at an entertainment facility to significant milestone celebrations with hundreds of guests and full catering service, our specialized event liability protection is built around what venues actually ask for. Other policies generally won't satisfy a venue's certificate-of-insurance or additional-insured requirement, and many commercial venues make proof of coverage a booking requirement.
What Is Birthday Party Insurance?
Birthday party insurance represents a specialized form of special event liability coverage designed to protect hosts financially when injuries occur or property sustains damage during celebrations. It is designed as a financial safety net that can help with legal defense costs and third-party injury and property damage claims stemming from your hosted event.
The practical reason hosts buy event-specific coverage is documentation. Other policies you may already hold generally won't satisfy a venue's certificate-of-insurance or additional-insured requirement. A Gigsure policy produces a COI naming the venue as an additional insured, which is what the venue is actually asking for.
We typically structure policies to cover a single event day, with setup and teardown dates covered when listed on your policy schedule. Our protection scales from small residential gatherings hosting 15 attendees to venue celebrations of up to 250 guests. Whether you're planning children's festivities or adult celebrations with beverage service, you can choose the options your event is eligible for, subject to the exclusions below.
Types of Celebrations Covered
Our coverage protects diverse birthday celebration formats:
- Children's parties: Coverage that can help with guest injury and accidental venue damage claims, subject to policy terms. Claims arising out of the supervision of, or responsibility for, children are excluded.
- Milestone celebrations: Sweet 16 parties and significant birthdays at 21, 30, 40, and 50
- Adult gatherings: Celebrations with alcohol service at dining establishments, banquet facilities, or dedicated event venues
- Outdoor events: Public park facilities, residential backyard gatherings, or garden venue celebrations
Who Needs Coverage?
While not every birthday gathering requires formal insurance, specific circumstances make our coverage essential - and frequently mandatory under venue contracts.
Venue Requirements
Commercial venues commonly require event liability coverage as a booking prerequisite. Entertainment facilities, bowling centers, banquet halls, restaurants offering private spaces, and community facilities typically require a Certificate of Insurance (COI) demonstrating minimum coverage of $1 million. Venues commonly require designation as an Additional Insured under your policy, extending protection to them for liability claims originating from your celebration.
Venue contracts demand careful review. Many facilities will not finalize a booking until they receive proof of coverage, and some ask for the certificate weeks before the event date.
Party Size and Risk Factors
Beyond venue mandates, certain celebration characteristics make our coverage a prudent financial decision:
- Large guest counts: Higher attendance correlates with increased accident probability
- Alcohol service: Beverage service dramatically elevates liability exposure for hosts
- High-risk activities: Inflatable structures, trampolines, and swimming pools are excluded, and other physical activities need review - confirm eligibility before featuring them
- Expensive venues: Rental locations where property damage could generate thousands in costs
- Non-family guests: Acquaintances, colleagues, or friends who may pursue formal claims
While close family members rarely initiate legal action over minor incidents, accidents generate substantial expenses regardless. Medical treatment, income loss, and property repairs accumulate rapidly.
Home Parties vs. Venue Events
Residential hosting doesn't eliminate coverage necessity. If you are renting a backyard venue, a park facility, or a clubhouse, the operator or the permit office will usually ask for a certificate of insurance naming them as an additional insured, and other policies generally won't produce that document. When renting equipment or hosting beyond immediate family, dedicated event coverage is worth pricing out.
Coverage Details and Protection
Understanding your policy components enables informed decisions and helps ensure appropriate protection matching your celebration's unique characteristics.
General Liability Protection
Our core policy foundation is general liability coverage, helping protect you when your celebration results in bodily injury or property damage affecting others. This encompasses:
Bodily injury to guests: If you are legally liable for an injury to a guest, the policy can respond to the covered claim, including defense of covered suits.
Property damage to venues: Celebrations inevitably create accident potential. If you are legally liable for damage to third-party property, including your venue's, the policy can respond to the covered claim, subject to your policy terms.
Host Liquor Liability
For adult birthday celebrations serving alcohol, our host liquor liability becomes vital. This protection can cover you when an intoxicated attendee causes injury or property damage after alcohol consumption at your celebration.
Critical distinction: Host liquor liability applies when serving alcohol without commercial licenses - standard for private celebrations. When alcohol is sold at your event, you need full liquor liability coverage, which we offer as an optional paid add-on.
Standard Coverage Limits
We offer these standard protection limits:
- $1 million per occurrence: Maximum payment for any single incident. Policies vary. See your issued policy for applicable terms, limits, conditions, and exclusions.
- $2 million aggregate: Total policy maximum for all claims during coverage period. Policies vary. See your issued policy for applicable terms, limits, conditions, and exclusions.
- Option to increase: higher liability limits are available for substantial events - $2 million per occurrence, and $3 million, $4 million, and $5 million aggregate limits. Priced based on the coverage selected and subject to minimum charges.
These limits routinely satisfy venue requirements and can help protect most birthday celebrations. Policies vary. See your issued policy for applicable terms, limits, conditions, and exclusions.
What's NOT Covered
These are common examples, not a complete list - see your policy for the full set of exclusions, terms, and conditions.
Understanding policy exclusions prevents unexpected gaps when filing claims. Exclusions include:
Event cancellation or postponement: this is liability coverage, so lost deposits are not reimbursed if you have to cancel for illness, weather, or venue complications. Gigsure does not offer an event cancellation product.
Guest medical payments: there is no medical payments coverage, so a guest's medical bills are not paid outside a covered third-party liability claim.
Participants and performers: claims arising out of the involvement of participants or performers are excluded, including injuries to the participants and performers themselves. Hired entertainers are performers.
Temporary structures: tents, stages, and similar temporary structures are not covered as property.
Fireworks and pyrotechnics: fireworks, pyrotechnics, and sparklers are not covered.
Inflatables and water activities: bounce houses and other inflatables are excluded, and water activities are blocked at eligibility rather than priced.
Supervision of children: claims arising out of the supervision of, or responsibility for, children are excluded.
Characters, magicians, and hypnotists: claims arising out of a Santa Claus appearance, or out of a hypnotist or magician, are excluded.
Food service: products and food-borne illness are not a coverage area.
Virtual and hybrid activity: virtual, hybrid, and livestreamed portions of an event are not covered.
Your own injuries or property: the policy is designed for third-party claims, so it doesn't address your own medical expenses or damaged belongings.
Cost Breakdown and Pricing
Party hosts frequently ask: "What's the investment?" Pricing varies by event details, and you can see your exact price before you buy.
Typical Price Ranges
Our event liability coverage for single-day policies with standard $1 million/$2 million limits is priced based on your event's specific details. The base premium is calculated using the number of guests, the number of event days, and a rate per guest, subject to a minimum premium. Premiums vary by event type, guest count, duration, and coverages selected.
- Small home parties (20-50 guests, no alcohol): pricing varies by event details
- Medium venue events (50-100 guests): pricing varies by event details
- Large celebrations (100-200 guests, with host liquor): pricing varies by event details
- Major events (200-250 guests, 2-day coverage): pricing varies by event details
Through our platform, you can obtain instant quotes and secure coverage for qualifying celebrations.
Factors Affecting Your Premium
Multiple variables influence pricing:
Number of attendees: Greater attendance increases risk exposure, elevating premiums. Celebrations for 25 children cost less than events accommodating 175 adults.
Event duration: Our standard policies cover single days, with setup and breakdown dates covered when listed on your policy schedule. Multi-day celebrations or extended coverage windows increase costs.
Alcohol service: Host liquor liability can be added for an additional charge for eligible events, as can full liquor liability for events where alcohol is sold.
Endorsements: A Waiver of Subrogation prevents the insurer's recovery actions against your venue when required; a Primary & Non-Contributory Endorsement makes your coverage primary when your venue requires it. Both can be added for an additional charge.
Coverage limits: Enhancing your limits increases your premium. Higher limits - $2 million per occurrence, and $3 million, $4 million, and $5 million aggregate limits - are priced based on the coverage selected and are subject to minimum charges, with the exact amount shown in your quote.
Taxes and fees: Additional charges may apply, including a transaction fee, an underwriting fee, a Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA) charge, if applicable, and state taxes and surplus lines stamping fees where required. All applicable charges will be displayed before you complete your purchase.
The examples above are provided for illustration purposes only. Final pricing may vary based on event details, state-specific requirements, eligibility, selected coverages, applicable taxes and fees, and underwriting rules in effect at the time coverage is purchased.
Ways to Save Money
Minimize costs through these approaches:
- Buy only what you need: Avoid over-insurance. Match coverage limits precisely to venue requirements
- Accurate guest counts: Supply accurate attendance projections - coverage depends on your actual attendance staying within the guest count on your policy
- Skip unnecessary add-ons: Purchase only optional coverages matching genuine needs

Expert Party Planning Tips
Intelligent planning minimizes risks and maximizes your insurance value:
Before the Party
- Review venue contracts carefully: Comprehend insurance mandates before contract execution
- Verify vendor coverage: Collect a written contract and certificate of insurance from entertainers, caterers, and equipment providers, since their own insurance is what responds to their work
- Conduct safety checks: Inspect venues for hazards including unstable railings, slippery surfaces, or inadequate lighting
- Plan alcohol service: Assign responsible servers, offer non-alcoholic alternatives, and coordinate guest transportation
- Create emergency plans: Identify first aid supply locations and maintain accessible emergency contacts
During the Event
- Monitor activities: Supervise higher-risk areas closely and keep walkways clear
- Address hazards immediately: Remediate spills, eliminate obstacles, and resolve problems upon identification
- Control alcohol consumption: Monitor for over-intoxication and discontinue service when appropriate
- Supervise children: Ensure adequate adult oversight for youth activities
- Document the event: Photographs and recordings assist if claims develop subsequently
After the Party
- Inspect for damage: Conduct venue walkthroughs with facility personnel to identify any issues
- Follow up on incidents: Document any occurrences and notify your insurer promptly
- Collect feedback: Record any safety concerns for future celebration planning
