Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about engagement party insurance.
Many venues require proof of at least $1,000,000 in general liability before they'll confirm your booking. Beyond venue requirements, a policy can help protect you financially if someone gets hurt or something gets damaged during your engagement party - costs that could otherwise come out of pocket.
Pricing depends on your guest count, event duration, and the coverage options you select. You can see your exact price instantly with no commitment required.
A standard policy covers general liability for third-party bodily injury and property damage. Optional add-ons include host liquor liability for events where alcohol is served (or full liquor liability where alcohol is sold), higher liability limits, Waiver of Subrogation, and Primary & Non-Contributory status.
Fill out the online form, choose your options, and your Certificate of Insurance arrives within minutes. Keep in mind that coverage itself begins no sooner than the next day - the earliest coverage date you can select is tomorrow. No phone calls, no paperwork to mail in.
Yes - at no extra charge, you name your venue on your certificate during checkout, and the policy's additional insured endorsements extend protection to owners, managers, and lessors of your event premises - and to municipalities issuing event permits - as required by written contract. The certificate reflecting this is included automatically. Caterers and other vendors aren't eligible for additional insured status. Note that venues often also require Waiver of Subrogation and a Primary & Non-Contributory Endorsement, which are separate add-ons available for an additional charge.
Alcohol-related coverage is never included automatically - it is an optional paid add-on. For eligible events where alcohol is served but not sold, host liquor liability can be added during checkout. Available alcohol-related coverage options depend on the event type and eligibility shown during checkout.
Gigsure policies cover liability and property protection for your event. If you need to cancel, contact your venue and vendors directly - cancellation terms are governed by your vendor agreements, not your event liability policy.

Complete Guide to Engagement Party Insurance
Everything you need to know before purchasing coverage for your engagement party.
Celebrating your engagement should be joyous - not stressful. But unexpected incidents can turn any party into a liability nightmare. Our engagement party insurance can help provide financial protection, allowing you to focus on celebrating this milestone moment.
What Is Engagement Party Insurance?
Engagement party insurance is event liability protection designed to help protect hosts from financial exposure during their celebration. It applies to the pre-wedding celebration itself, for a single-day party or a celebration running up to three event days.
Coverage can respond to third-party bodily injury and third-party property damage occurring at your celebration. Events of many sizes can be covered, from intimate gatherings of 20 guests to larger celebrations of up to 250 guests.
Coverage is available for many celebration locations, from restaurants and dedicated event spaces to private residences and destination venues. With venues increasingly asking for proof of insurance before confirming bookings, a policy provides both liability protection and the certificate of insurance required to move forward with your plans.
Types of Coverage Available
Event Liability Protection
General liability forms the cornerstone of an event policy. It responds to third-party bodily injury and third-party property damage claims arising from your celebration.
Our base liability limits are $1 million per occurrence and $2 million aggregate. Policies vary. See your issued policy for applicable terms, limits, conditions, and exclusions. This structure means coverage can apply up to $1 million for each individual incident and up to $2 million total throughout your coverage period.
Host liquor liability represents a critical component when serving alcoholic beverages. This coverage is an optional add-on, available for an additional charge, when beverages are complimentary (served, not sold), though you'll need Full Liquor Liability if you are charging for drinks.
Additional Protection Options
Beyond standard liability coverage, endorsements are available for specific venue requirements. Additional insured status is included at no extra cost, so you can name your venue or its property owner on your certificate, which is a common venue requirement. Municipalities issuing event permits can be named as well. Caterers, vendors, and sponsors are not eligible for additional insured status.
- Higher liability limits: increase your limits above the base $1M/$2M - a $2 million per occurrence limit and $3 million, $4 million, and $5 million aggregate limits are available. Priced based on the coverage selected and subject to minimum charges, with your price shown at checkout
- Host Liquor Liability: for eligible events where alcohol is served but not sold; available for an additional charge
- Full Liquor Liability: where alcohol is sold, for eligible event types; available for an additional charge
- Waiver of Subrogation: prevents the insurer's recovery actions against your venue when required; available for an additional charge
- Primary & Non-Contributory Endorsement: makes your coverage primary when your venue requires it; available for an additional charge
Damage to Premises Rented To You is included on every policy at no extra charge, with a $100,000 limit for damage to the venue you rent.
How Much Does Coverage Cost?
Pricing varies by event details. The base premium is calculated using number of guests x number of event days x rate per guest, subject to a minimum premium. Optional coverages - Waiver of Subrogation, Primary & Non-Contributory Endorsement, Host Liquor Liability, and Full Liquor Liability - can be added for an additional charge, and higher liability limits are priced based on the coverage selected and subject to minimum charges.
Additional charges may apply, including a transaction fee, an underwriting fee, a Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA) charge, if applicable, and state taxes and surplus lines stamping fees where required. All applicable charges will be displayed before you complete your purchase.
Multiple factors influence your premium:
- Guest count: Larger attendance creates elevated risk, so hosting 50 people costs less than accommodating 200
- Duration: Single-day celebrations cost less than multi-day events
- Alcohol service: Host liquor liability is an optional add-on, available for an additional charge, for events serving (not selling) alcohol
With liability coverage for eligible events, underwritten by an A++ (Superior) AM Best rated insurance carrier. Our policy offers $1M/$2M base liability limits, optional host liquor liability, and complimentary additional insured certificates - with transparent pricing and no deductible on most policies. Premiums vary by event type, guest count, duration, and coverages selected.
What's NOT Covered
These are common examples, not a complete list - see your policy for the full set of exclusions, terms, and conditions.
Understanding the exclusions is as important as knowing the protections. Common examples of what is not covered:
Medical payments: There is no guest medical payments coverage. Medical expenses are not paid outside an established liability claim.
Participants and performers: Injuries to participants, performers, and contestants are not covered.
Temporary structures: Tents, stages, and similar temporary structures are not covered as property.
Fireworks and pyrotechnics: Fireworks, pyrotechnics, and sparklers are not covered.
Bounce houses and inflatables: Bounce houses and inflatables are excluded.
Water activities: Anything in or on water is blocked at eligibility and is never covered.
Food service and products: Food service, catering incidents, and food-borne illness are not a coverage area.
Virtual and hybrid activity: Virtual, hybrid, and livestreamed portions of an event are not covered.
Event cancellation: This is liability coverage. It does not reimburse deposits or costs if your party is called off.
Primary status by default: The policy is not primary by default. If your venue requires primary and non-contributory wording, that is a paid add-on, available for an additional charge.
Do You Actually Need This Coverage?
While not every engagement party demands insurance, certain factors indicate when coverage represents a wise investment:
Your venue requires it: This represents the clearest scenario. Numerous restaurants, banquet facilities, and event locations mandate proof of insurance before booking. They seek protection against potential damage to their property or claims arising from your event.
You have money committed: Once you have signed contracts and paid non-refundable deposits, a liability claim would land on top of costs you cannot recover. Pricing varies by event details, and you see your full price before you buy.
You're serving alcohol: Liquor liability represents a significant concern for any gathering. Even when guests supply their own beverages, you remain potentially liable if someone gets hurt or causes damage after drinking at your party.
You're hosting at home: A residential celebration with a long guest list and hired vendors is exactly the situation a standalone event liability policy is written for. If any part of the celebration moves to a rented space or a permitted park, other policies generally won't satisfy that location's certificate-of-insurance or additional-insured requirement, while a Gigsure policy produces a COI naming the venue as an additional insured, which is what the venue is actually asking for.
You have significant assets to protect: When you own property, maintain substantial savings, or generate high income, you become a more appealing litigation target. Liability coverage helps safeguard these assets if someone sustains injury at your celebration.
You're planning an outdoor or destination party: Outdoor venues introduce weather-related liability risks. Destination celebrations often involve rented venues with strict insurance requirements, and a COI is available within minutes to help meet those requirements.
You have 50+ guests: More guests means more movement, more activity, and more opportunity for something to go wrong. The larger your celebration, the more useful liability protection becomes.

Coverage for Specific Party Types
Home Engagement Parties
Hosting at your residence offers intimacy and budget advantages, but generates unique liability exposures. A standalone event liability policy is written for the celebration itself and produces a certificate of insurance you can hand to anyone who asks for one.
Event liability coverage responds to third-party bodily injury and third-party property damage claims arising from your celebration, and host liquor liability can be added for an additional charge when alcohol is served but not sold.
For backyard celebrations, note that temporary structures such as tents and stages are not covered as property. Bounce houses and inflatables are excluded, and anything in or on water is blocked at eligibility, so confirm the activities you have planned before you buy.
Restaurant and Venue Events
Restaurant celebrations and dedicated event facilities commonly require proof of insurance before booking. The certificate of insurance is the document they are asking for, and it needs to name them correctly.
Name the venue as an additional insured on your certificate, as required by written contract. Verify the required coverage limits in your agreement, since venues often specify minimum amounts. Damage to Premises Rented To You, included on every policy at $100,000, is the coverage a venue is thinking of when it asks who pays if the space itself is damaged.
Venues may set their own attendance caps or restrict certain activities, so confirm your specific plans are eligible when you apply. An engagement party can be covered for up to 250 guests across up to three event days. If alcohol will be sold rather than served, full liquor liability is the add-on to select for eligible events.
Outdoor and Garden Parties
Outdoor celebrations introduce weather-related liability hazards: uneven terrain, temporary structures, and changing conditions. Liability coverage responds to third-party bodily injury and property damage claims, subject to the policy's terms and exclusions. The temporary structures themselves, such as tents and stages, are not covered as property.
Describe your outdoor plans accurately when you answer the eligibility questions. When you're using a public park or botanical garden, the municipality issuing your event permit can be named as an additional insured.
Destination Engagement Parties
Planning a celebration in another state or city adds complexity. If you are renting an event venue, coverage is currently available in 23 states: Alaska, Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Maine, North Carolina, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and West Virginia. If your venue is outside these states, coverage may not be available. Events at other location types, such as a private residence, are not subject to this state list.
International destination parties are outside the scope of this coverage. Gigsure policies are written for events taking place in the United States.
Expert Tips for Maximum Protection
Read your venue contract carefully: Many agreements include insurance requirements embedded in fine print. Identify these requirements early so you purchase adequate coverage limits and add the venue as an additional insured before their deadline.
Document everything: Photograph your venue before and after the celebration. Maintain all receipts, agreements, and vendor correspondence. If you need to file a claim, comprehensive documentation significantly strengthens your position and accelerates the process.
Know who to contact: Save the claims contact shown on your policy documents, along with your policy number, in your phone. Designate someone (like your maid of honor or best man) to handle insurance matters if you're occupied with celebrating.
Buy coverage early: Purchase as soon as you sign your venue agreement - your COI is delivered instantly and can be provided to the venue right away.
Insuring multiple celebrations: If you're hosting several pre-wedding events (engagement party, bridal shower, bachelor/bachelorette events), each is a separate event type with its own policy - purchase coverage for each celebration you're hosting.
Verify alcohol coverage: Host liquor liability is an optional add-on, available for an additional charge - select it if alcohol will be served. When you're charging for drinks (even through a cash bar or ticket arrangement), you need Full Liquor Liability instead, which is a separate add-on, carries its own charge, and cannot be combined with host liquor liability.
Review exclusions thoroughly: Understanding what the policy doesn't cover prevents disappointment if you need to file a claim. Pay special attention to the activity restrictions and to the eligibility questions you answered at checkout.
Communicate with vendors: Inform your caterer, photographer, and other vendors that you have insurance. Vendors can't be added as additional insureds on your policy - instead, you should have a written contract with each vendor and keep a certificate of their own insurance on file.
