Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about wedding reception insurance.
Many venues require proof of at least $1,000,000 in general liability before they'll confirm your booking. Beyond venue requirements, a policy can protect you financially if someone gets hurt or something gets damaged during your wedding reception - costs that could otherwise come out of pocket.
Pricing depends on your guest count, event duration, and the coverage options you select. You can see your exact price instantly with no commitment required.
A standard policy covers general liability for bodily injury and property damage. Optional add-ons include host liquor liability for events where alcohol is served, Waiver of Subrogation, and Primary & Non-Contributory status.
Fill out the online form, choose your options, and your Certificate of Insurance arrives within minutes. Keep in mind that coverage itself begins no sooner than the next day - the earliest coverage date you can select is tomorrow. No phone calls, no paperwork to mail in.
Yes - at no extra charge, you name your venue on your certificate during checkout, and the policy's additional insured endorsements extend protection to owners, managers, and lessors of your event premises - and to municipalities issuing event permits - as required by written contract. The certificate reflecting this is included automatically. Caterers and other vendors aren't eligible for additional insured status. Note that venues often also require Waiver of Subrogation and Primary and Non-Contributory, which are separate paid add-ons available for an additional charge.
Alcohol-related coverage is never included automatically - it is an optional paid add-on. For eligible events where alcohol is served but not sold, host liquor liability can be added during checkout. Available alcohol-related coverage options depend on the event type and eligibility shown during checkout.
Event cancellation is not covered, and Gigsure does not sell a cancellation product. Lost deposits, postponement costs, and vendor no-shows fall outside an event liability policy. If you need to cancel, contact your venue and vendors directly, since those terms are governed by your vendor agreements.
All policies are underwritten by an insurance carrier rated A++ (Superior) by AM Best - one of the highest ratings in the insurance industry. Your carrier is named on your quote and policy documents.
Complete Guide to Wedding Reception Insurance
Everything you need to know before purchasing coverage for your wedding reception.
A wedding reception is a significant financial commitment, usually with deposits paid months ahead of the day itself. Wedding reception insurance is event liability coverage that can help reduce your financial exposure if a guest is injured or the venue is damaged during your celebration.
Venues and vendors often require proof of liability insurance before your event can proceed. Other policies generally won't satisfy a venue's certificate-of-insurance or additional-insured requirement. A Gigsure policy produces a COI naming the venue as an additional insured, which is the document the venue is actually asking for.
This guide explains wedding reception insurance: what the policy covers, what it excludes, the coverage options available, pricing, timing considerations, and how to select the policy that best fits your celebration.
What Is Wedding Reception Insurance?
Wedding reception insurance is event liability coverage that helps protect couples and their families from financial exposure when an accident happens at their celebration. A Gigsure policy is written for a single event type, so select Wedding Reception when you apply. The ceremony, rehearsal dinner, and other related events are separate event types that each require their own policy.
The policy responds to third-party bodily injury and third-party property damage claims arising from your event, subject to its terms. Alcohol-related incidents are only in scope if you purchase host liquor liability or full liquor liability as a paid add-on. Policies vary. See your issued policy for applicable terms, limits, conditions, and exclusions.
Coverage applies to the dates selected in your policy. Policies vary. See your issued policy for applicable terms, limits, conditions, and exclusions, including the specific coverage start and end times.
Who Needs This Protection?
- Engaged couples hosting a reception and seeking protection against liability claims
- Parents or family members who are financially contributing to the celebration
- Anyone hosting at a venue that requires liability coverage (increasingly common)
- Couples with outdoor or destination celebrations
- Those using multiple vendors whose contracts require the host to carry coverage
Types of Coverage Available
A wedding reception policy is built around general liability, with paid endorsements you can add when your venue contract calls for them.
Liability Coverage
General liability responds to third-party claims arising from your celebration. Many wedding venues require this coverage as a condition of their rental agreements, and they usually name the limit they want to see on the certificate.
Bodily Injury and Property Damage: Third-party bodily injury and third-party property damage are the core of the policy. Base liability limits are $1 million per occurrence and $2 million aggregate. A $2 Million Per Occurrence limit is available, as are $3 Million, $4 Million, and $5 Million Aggregate Limits, priced based on the coverage selected and subject to minimum charges. Policies vary. See your issued policy for applicable terms, limits, conditions, and exclusions.
Damage to Premises Rented To You: Every policy includes Damage to Premises Rented To You at $100,000, at no extra charge. This is the coverage a venue has in mind when it asks who pays if the space is damaged.
Host Liquor Liability: An optional paid add-on for receptions where alcohol is served but not sold. Where alcohol is sold, full liquor liability is available instead for an additional charge. The two are mutually exclusive, and neither is ever included automatically.
Waiver of Subrogation and Primary & Non-Contributory: Two endorsements venue contracts frequently demand, each available for an additional charge. The policy is not primary by default, so if your contract requires primary and non-contributory status, that endorsement has to be purchased.
Additional insured: Your venue can be named as an additional insured on the certificate at no extra charge, as can a municipality issuing an event permit. Caterers, vendors, and sponsors are not eligible for additional insured status.
The policy also carries a Products and Completed Operations aggregate limit of $1,000,000. This is a stated policy limit, not product or food-service protection; products, food service, and food-borne illness are not a coverage area.
What's Not Covered
The following are outside the policy. This is not a complete list, so see your issued policy for the full set of applicable terms, limits, conditions, and exclusions.
- Event cancellation. There is no cancellation product, so lost deposits, postponement costs, and vendor no-shows are not covered.
- Medical payments (Coverage C). Excluded, so guest medical bills are not paid without a liability claim.
- Injuries to participants and performers. Their own injuries are not covered.
- Temporary structures. Tents, stages, and similar temporary structures are not covered as property.
- Fireworks and sparklers. Fireworks, pyrotechnics, and sparkler send-offs are not covered.
- Bounce houses and inflatables. Excluded.
- Water activities. Not eligible, and never priced or covered.
- Virtual, hybrid, and livestreamed activity. Not covered.
- Food service and food-borne illness. Not a coverage area.
Coverage Costs and Pricing
Pricing varies by event details. The base premium for a Wedding Reception is your guest count multiplied by the number of event days multiplied by the rate for the event type, subject to a minimum premium.
How the Price Is Built
- Base premium: calculated using number of guests x number of event days x rate per guest, subject to a minimum premium. Receptions above 400 guests are rated in an extended band, up to the 500-guest ceiling.
- Optional coverages: Waiver of Subrogation, Primary & Non-Contributory Endorsement, Host Liquor Liability, and Full Liquor Liability can be added for an additional charge.
- Higher liability limits: $2 Million Per Occurrence, and $3 Million, $4 Million, and $5 Million Aggregate Limits. Priced based on the coverage selected and subject to minimum charges.
- Taxes and fees: additional charges may apply, including a transaction fee, an underwriting fee, a Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA) charge, if applicable, and state taxes and surplus lines stamping fees where required. All applicable charges will be displayed before you complete your purchase.
When to Purchase Protection
Coverage can be secured as soon as your event is confirmed. Pricing and refund terms vary. See your quote and issued policy for details.
- Liability Coverage: Available as late as the day before your event for eligible events. Policies vary. See your issued policy for applicable terms, limits, conditions, and exclusions.

- Update coverage if your event grows to avoid being underinsured
- Purchase before signing venue contracts so your proof of coverage is ready when the venue asks for it
