Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about first communion insurance.
Many venues require proof of at least $1,000,000 in general liability before they'll confirm your booking. Beyond venue requirements, a policy can help protect you financially if someone gets hurt or something gets damaged during your first communion - costs that could otherwise come out of pocket.
Pricing depends on your guest count, event duration, and the coverage options you select. You can see your exact price instantly with no commitment required.
A standard policy covers general liability for bodily injury and property damage. Optional add-ons include host liquor liability for events where alcohol is served, Waiver of Subrogation, and Primary & Non-Contributory status.
Fill out the online form, choose your options, and your Certificate of Insurance arrives within minutes. Keep in mind that coverage itself begins no sooner than the next day - the earliest coverage date you can select is tomorrow. No phone calls, no paperwork to mail in.
Yes - at no extra charge, you name your venue on your certificate during checkout, and the policy's additional insured endorsements extend protection to owners, managers, and lessors of your event premises - and to municipalities issuing event permits - as required by written contract. The certificate reflecting this is included automatically. Caterers and other vendors aren't eligible for additional insured status. Note that venues often also require Waiver of Subrogation and Primary & Non-Contributory, which are separate add-ons available for an additional charge.
Alcohol-related coverage is never included automatically - it is an optional paid add-on. For eligible events where alcohol is served but not sold, host liquor liability can be added during checkout. Available alcohol-related coverage options depend on the event type and eligibility shown during checkout.
Gigsure policies cover liability and property protection for your event. If you need to cancel, contact your venue and vendors directly - cancellation terms are governed by your vendor agreements, not your event liability policy.
All policies are underwritten by an insurance carrier rated A++ (Superior) by AM Best - one of the highest ratings in the insurance industry. Your carrier is named on your quote and policy documents.
Complete Guide to First Communion Insurance
Everything you need to know before purchasing coverage for your first communion.
First Communion celebrations are cherished family milestones that often require event liability insurance before venues will confirm your reservation. We provide event liability coverage for families hosting receptions at banquet halls, restaurants, community centers, and parks - which can help provide financial security against unexpected accidents while you focus on this meaningful religious occasion.
What Is Event Liability Coverage for First Communion Parties?
Event liability coverage for First Communion parties is short-term protection built for celebration receptions held after the religious ceremony. It responds to third-party bodily injury and property damage claims that can arise during gatherings, from intimate family dinners to large parish-wide celebrations.
Venues typically mandate this protection before finalizing rental agreements. An event policy addresses third-party bodily injury and property damage arising from your celebration, and alcohol-related liability can be added for eligible events where drinks are served to adults. Other policies you may already hold generally won't satisfy a venue's certificate-of-insurance or additional-insured requirement. A Gigsure policy produces a COI naming the venue as an additional insured, which is what the venue is actually asking for.
Base protection includes general liability at a $1 million per occurrence limit with a $2 million aggregate, Damage to Premises Rented To You at $100,000 included at no extra charge, and a $1,000,000 products and completed operations aggregate (a stated policy limit, not product or food-service protection); host liquor liability is an optional paid add-on when alcohol is served. Policies vary. See your issued policy for applicable terms, limits, conditions, and exclusions. The certificate of insurance that venues require comes directly from your policy documentation.
When You Need Coverage for Your Celebration
Venue requirements drive most First Communion insurance purchases. Banquet facilities, restaurants offering private dining spaces, community centers, and public parks commonly mandate proof of coverage before reservations are finalized. Church halls sometimes request certificates as well. What they are asking for is a certificate of insurance naming them as an additional insured, which is the document an event policy produces.
Apart from venue mandates, specific circumstances make our protection essential for safeguarding your family's finances:
- Renting equipment - Rental agreements for tables, chairs, and photo booths often ask you to carry your own liability coverage
- Serving alcohol - Receptions featuring wine or cocktails for adults need host liquor liability coverage
- Hiring vendors - Catering companies, photographers, and entertainment providers may request you maintain coverage
- Large gatherings - A bigger guest list means more people moving through the space, and more opportunity for an incident
- Outdoor venues - Parks and garden settings introduce additional trip and fall hazards
Even for a small celebration at home, a rental partner or a co-hosting venue may still ask for a certificate of insurance naming it as an additional insured. That certificate is what an event policy produces, so it is worth reading your agreements early to see whether one is required of you.
Coverage Types and Protection Levels
Understanding the policy components helps families select appropriate protection for their celebrations. Base liability and the optional endorsements are combined into a single policy at checkout.
General Liability Protection
The core coverage responds when a guest is injured during your celebration. It applies to third-party bodily injury and property damage claims, including legal defense, where you are found legally liable. There is no medical payments coverage on the policy, so guest medical bills are not paid regardless of fault.
Base limits are $1 million per occurrence with a $2 million aggregate. Policies vary. See your issued policy for applicable terms, limits, conditions, and exclusions. That structure means up to $1 million for an individual occurrence and $2 million in total for all claims arising from your event. Higher options are available at checkout: a $2 Million Per Occurrence limit, and $3 Million, $4 Million, and $5 Million Aggregate Limits. Higher limits are priced based on the coverage selected and are subject to minimum charges.
Property Damage Coverage
Damage to Premises Rented To You is included on every policy at a $100,000 limit, at no extra charge. It is the coverage a venue has in mind when it asks who pays if the space you rented gets damaged.
It applies subject to your legal liability and the terms of the issued policy. Temporary structures such as tents and staging are not covered as property.
Host Liquor Liability
When beer, wine, or spirits are served at an adult reception, host liquor liability is the endorsement to look at. It addresses alcohol-related liability arising from your celebration, and it sits separately from general liability because of the risks alcohol introduces.
This coverage is not included automatically - it is an optional add-on that can be added for an additional charge. Host Liquor Liability can be added at checkout for eligible events where alcohol is served but not sold. Add this protection if any alcohol will be available, even just wine service with meals. Where alcohol is sold rather than served, Full Liquor Liability is the option instead; the two are mutually exclusive.
How Much Does Protection Cost?
Event insurance for a First Communion celebration is priced from your event's specific details. Pricing depends on multiple factors that correspond to your event's risk profile. Premiums vary by event type, guest count, duration, and coverages selected.
Guest count is the primary pricing input. Base premium is calculated using: number of guests x number of event days x rate per guest, subject to a minimum premium - so a 50-person gathering prices below a 150-person reception.
Optional coverages can be added for an additional charge, including Waiver of Subrogation, Primary & Non-Contributory Endorsement, Host Liquor Liability, and Full Liquor Liability. Taxes and fees may also apply, including a transaction fee, an underwriting fee, a Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA) charge if applicable, and state taxes and surplus lines stamping fees where required. All applicable charges will be displayed before you complete your purchase.
Coverage limits affect cost. The base $1 million per occurrence / $2 million aggregate limits are included. You can raise the per-occurrence limit to $2 Million, and the aggregate to $3 Million, $4 Million, or $5 Million; higher limits are priced based on the coverage selected and are subject to minimum charges. Check your rental agreement for the limits your venue actually requires. Additional coverages such as host liquor liability and other endorsements available at checkout also affect your premium.
Our policies cover full event days, so pricing is per day rather than per hour.
The examples above are provided for illustration purposes only. Final pricing may vary based on event details, state-specific requirements, eligibility, selected coverages, applicable taxes and fees, and underwriting rules in effect at the time coverage is purchased.
Consider the expense in perspective: a single injury or damage claim can cost far more than the policy itself, and liability coverage exists for exactly that kind of incident.
What's Covered and What's Not
Understanding what the policy covers and excludes helps families maintain realistic expectations and prevents surprises when filing claims.
What is not covered. Medical payments coverage is not part of the policy, so there is no guest medical benefit that pays regardless of fault. Injuries to participants, performers, and contestants are not covered. Temporary structures such as tents and staging are not covered as property. Fireworks, pyrotechnics, and sparklers are not covered. Bounce houses and inflatables are excluded. Water activities are not eligible. Virtual, hybrid, and livestreamed activity is not covered. Products, food service, and food-borne illness are not a coverage area. This is not a complete list, so read the exclusions in your issued policy.
Event cancellation is a different kind of product and is not offered here, so a weather postponement or a called-off reception is not something an event liability policy responds to.
The policy is also not primary by default. If your venue contract requires primary and non-contributory wording, that endorsement has to be purchased at checkout for an additional charge.

How to Get Insurance for Your Reception
Obtaining our coverage is simple when you know what information to compile and when to begin. Most families can secure protection in under 10 minutes with our instant online quotes.
Timeline for Purchase
Coverage is often purchased 2–4 weeks before the event. This timing allows review of policy terms, any needed modifications, and certificate delivery to the venue without pressure. However, coverage can be purchased as late as the day before your event, subject to eligibility.
Avoid waiting until the final days. Many venues want the certificate in hand well before the event date, so check your rental agreement for its submission deadline. Policies vary. See your issued policy for applicable terms, limits, conditions, and exclusions. Starting early also provides time to compare options if desired.
Information You'll Need
Before requesting your quote, compile these details to expedite the process:
- Event date and time (start and end)
- Venue name and complete address
- Expected guest count (be precise - underestimating can create coverage complications)
- Coverage requirements from your venue (review your rental agreement)
- Whether you're serving alcohol
- Any special activities or equipment (photo booths, temporary structures, etc.)
Having this information prepared makes our quote process efficient and helps ensure accurate pricing.
Getting Coverage with Us
Our online application takes about five minutes from start to certificate:
- Select your event type: choose "First Communion".
- Enter your guest count and number of event days.
- Tell us who is purchasing the coverage.
- Enter your venue's address and location type.
- Pick your coverage dates. The earliest coverage can begin is the day after purchase.
- Answer a few eligibility questions about venue activities, musical performances, vendors or temporary structures, and prior claims.
- Choose your add-ons: host liquor liability or full liquor liability for eligible events, Waiver of Subrogation, and Primary and Non-Contributory.
- Review your quote and pay by card. You can also increase your per-occurrence and aggregate liability limits above the base $1M/$2M here. Additional Insureds, such as your venue, can be added for free.
- Receive your documents: your Certificate of Insurance arrives within minutes, and coverage begins on the dates you selected.
Understanding Your Certificate of Insurance
The certificate of insurance is the document your venue requires as proof of coverage. Understanding what venues examine helps ensure your certificate is accepted promptly.
Minimum coverage amounts appear prominently on the certificate. Most venues require $1 million per occurrence, which is our standard amount for event insurance. Some premium venues or those in litigation-prone areas may require $2 million per occurrence.
Additional insured status means the venue is named on your certificate, at no additional charge, and it is the most frequent venue requirement. Additional insured status is limited to venues and to municipalities issuing event permits; caterers, vendors, and sponsors are not eligible. The venue's legal name and address must match exactly what's specified in your rental contract.
Waiver of Subrogation gives up the right to pursue the venue to recover claim costs, and many venues require it. Primary & Non-Contributory Endorsement makes the policy apply first. The policy is not primary by default, so this endorsement has to be purchased when your contract calls for it. Both are separate paid add-ons at checkout.
If your venue rejects your certificate, contact us immediately. Often it's a straightforward correction - adding missing language or rectifying the venue's legal name. We can update and reissue certificates within minutes.
Planning Checklist with Insurance
Integrating insurance into your planning timeline helps ensure you're protected without last-minute complications. Follow this schedule for seamless preparation:
3-4 months before: Select and reserve your venue. Review the rental agreement carefully to identify insurance specifications. Note the coverage amounts, additional insured requirements, and certificate submission deadline.
2-3 months before: Verify all insurance requirements with your venue. If you're renting equipment or contracting vendors, determine if they require you to carry coverage. You should also get a written contract and a certificate of insurance from each vendor and keep them on file. Create a list of everything your certificate needs to include.
1 month before: Get your insurance quote and review the policy details. Verify the coverage amounts align with your venue's requirements. Add host liquor liability at checkout if applicable.
2 weeks before: Purchase your policy and obtain the certificate of insurance. Review it thoroughly to ensure all required language is included and the venue name is accurate. Add your venue as an additional insured as needed.
1 week before: Submit your certificate to the venue. Verify they received it and that it satisfies their requirements. Retain a copy for your records and bring it to the event.
Day of event: Keep your policy information accessible in case questions arise. While claims are uncommon, having our contact information provides peace of mind if something unexpected occurs.
Coverage for Other Religious Celebrations
The same event insurance that can help protect First Communion receptions can work for other religious milestones. Baptism receptions, Confirmation parties, and Quinceañera events can benefit from similar coverage, subject to eligibility for each event type.
These celebrations share common characteristics: venue rentals, substantial guest counts, and possible alcohol service at adult gatherings. Insurance requirements and coverage options are similar across many of these celebrations.
A Gigsure policy is event liability coverage for the celebration itself. It is not cancellation coverage, and it does not cover vendor no-shows, gifts, or attire. First Communion coverage can be written for up to 3 event days, which suits a ceremony and reception held on the same weekend.
If your family celebrates multiple religious milestones throughout the year, each event is covered under its own policy. Pricing and refund terms vary. See your quote and issued policy for details.
